Kadija (front left) and her family pictured here are part of the network of associations and partner NGOs @mediamattersforwomenworks with to distribute our podcasts to women and girlsin and around Waterloo, Western District. When we met with Kadija's family last month to evaluate the effectiveness and reach of our programmes, we learned that our podcasts were also being listened to by 100s of students at the school her brother works with. Her brother was so positively impacted by our podcasts on teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and violence against women that he too wanted to share them with the students he teaches and their peers. This is great news! Everyone can listen to and share our podcasts for free via Bluetooth on mobile phones. *Photo credit: @vbarbacci*#womensrights#womensempowerment#education#mobilelearning#bluetooth#bluetootheducation#mp3#sound#radio#broadcastjournalism#broadcast#podcast#womensprograms#womensprogrammes#srhr#srhrs#sexualreproductivehealthrights#sexualreproductivehealthrightsandservices#femaleempowerment#womenandgirls#learning#srhr#teenagepregnancy#violenceagainstwomen#femaleeducation#heforshe#herfuture#womenandgirlsempowerment

Africa’s women and girls are excluded from the benefits of the digital information age because of their extreme poverty. We use an innovative combination of small consumer electronics with solar rechargers and, above all, Bluetooth technology. MEDIA MATTERS FOR WOMEN (MMW) WAS SELECTED TO PRESENT OUR WORK AT THE UNITED NATIONS!In 2013-2014 Media Matters for Women (MMW) proved its pilot project in Sierra Leone, which confirmed that it is possible to create a new kind of information network which is inexpensive to build and maintain, especially in comparison to radio. Based on our success, particularly during the Ebola crisis, MMW was selected to present our innovative concept at the February 23-27, 2015 UNESCO and UN Women conference on women’s empowerment and technology held in Paris, France. In this picture (left to right):Valentina Barbacci, Executive Director; Sarah Bomkapre Kamara, Founding Member; Sharon Bylenga, Chairman and Founding Member; Alinah Kallon, Senior Journalist.UNESCO & UN Women have also offered to bring MMW Senior Journalist Alinah Kallon from Makeni, Sierra Leone to co-present at this event.Among other aspects of our work, we will be presenting “MMW In A Box” which provides interested NGOs, government representatives, and activists with the tools they need to replicate our MMW concept....anywhere!Here is the conference link:http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/themes/icts/m4ed/mobile-learning-week/UNESCO is partnered with UN Women to raise the visibility and impact of the event.Last year more than 700 participants from over 60 countries attended.Join MMW team members Alinah Kallon and Sharon Bylenga, Monday, February 23, 2015 at 14.30 for their presentation “Ebola:Using Bluetooth to Reach Rural Women and Girls in Sierra Leone with News and Information.” #womensrights#womensempowerment#education#mobilelearning#bluetooth#bluetootheducation#mp3#sound#radio#broadcastjournalism#broadcasts#podcasts#womensprograms#womensprogrammes#srhr#srhrs#sexualreproductivehealth#sexualreproductivehealthrights#sexualreproductivehealthrightsandservices#femaleempowerment#womenandgirls#learning

Media Matters for Women Listeners at Waterloo Listening CentreWe are addressing the digital divide as it exists in Africa, where women, especially rural women, disproportionately lack quality news and information that allows them to access and fully enjoy their rights. We are addressing gender-based violence, maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, and other issues relevant to rural African women today. Lacking exposure to ideas about basic human rights, women and girls have little chance to unlock a better future for themselves and their communities.#womensrights#womensempowerment#education#mobilelearning#bluetooth#bluetootheducation#mp3#sound#radio#broadcastjournalism#broadcasts#podcasts#womensprograms#womensprogrammes#srhr#srhrs#sexualreproductivehealth#sexualreproductivehealthrights#sexualreproductivehealthrightsandservices#femaleempowerment#womenandgirls#learning

Media Matters for Women (MMW) is at the forefront of harnessing Bluetooth technology to address the unmet information needs of women and girls in rural Africa. Our two successful pilot projects in Sierra Leone (funded by Oak Foundation, Indigo Trust, African Women’s Development Fund, and Amplify Change) successfully demonstrated a new kind of information network which is inexpensive to build and maintain, especially in comparison to radio. Our information networks connect women and girls so they can share information, learn from each other, entertain each other, hear crucial messages, give feedback, and join in a movement that begins in their village and extends across their region.MMW fosters local journalism capabilities, produces original audio content in professional podcast format in multiple languages, and delivers these podcasts to last-mile women and girls via mobile phone.MMW is registered in the U.S. as a Section 501(c) 3 nonprofit.#womensrights#womensempowerment#education#mobilelearning#bluetooth#bluetootheducation#mp3#sound#radio#broadcastjournalism#broadcasts#podcasts#womensprograms#womensprogrammes#srhr#srhrs#sexualreproductivehealth#sexualreproductivehealthrights#sexualreproductivehealthrightsandservices#femaleempowerment#womenandgirls#learning
