(1/3) A few years ago, Kate and I started a photography project called Strange Dreams. Our goal was to get portraits of strangers holding a snippet about what they wanted to do before they die. That winter we learned a lot about people and the spectrum of the human experience.
(2/3) For our first couple shots, we moved from person to person fairly quickly, not taking the time to engage and listen. After leaving this woman, I remember feeling like we were missing the point of the project. Even though we were creating something, we were taking and giving nothing in return. We never learned why this woman lost touch with her son, and we don’t know if they’ll be reunited, but after meeting her, we learned to listen.
