An early morning visit from a familiar friend at Reteti! 🐘😊 One of the wild elephants in the area came by to check on the Reteti orphans. Mpala was the first to go over to say hello, then all the curious orphans followed. Photos by @katie.rowe babyelephants

A little herd of little elephants inside the boma. The communities of Samburu County have a long history of innovative conservation and the idea for the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary came out of community conversations. Over a period of two years, there was a series of meetings among the Samburu tribe and other stakeholders to discuss the benefits that healthy elephants could bring to the area: employment, education and security. Today, the elders tell us their prayer for the future is that we as a community will master the art of wildlife and environmental management. That is the wish for all of us here have as well. It's mealtime at the Reteti boma! All of our elephants eat every three hours, around the clock. Although it happens all the time, everyone is still super excited for it. All of the ellies at the water trough. They love fresh, cool water. Fun fact: an adult elephant trunk can hold over two gallons of water in its trunk at at time. It's starting to get dry again here, which is worrying, because many calves are orphaned because of drought, but, for now, we are enjoying our day. Happy New Year, from our herd, to yours! In this photo, the Reteti herd is having a wonderful time in the wilderness. Each day, from 6am to 6pm, the orphaned elephant calves of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) head into the wilderness so they can learn how to behave in the wild. They spend their days stripping leaves, tasting bark, pushing down small trees, and, best of all, taking luxurious mud baths. They may even encounter other wild animals, which will help them learn how to respond when they are on their own in the future. @r.e.s.c.u.e plans to release the elephants in groups, once they are old enough and strong enough to survive on their own. Pokot receives some love from one of the keepers at Reteti, which is also Africa's first community owned and operated elephant sanctuary. Pokot was found in Turkana on Northern Rangelands Trust's Pello Conservancy, a victim of the drought. After days of intensive care, the exciting signs of playfulness started to emerge, showing that he was making a recovery and getting his spirit back. Today, he's a beloved little bull at Reteti. Keeper Naomi Leshongoro gentles orphaned Pokot with the hand of experience: She had cared for and released five young elephants into the wild before Reteti opened last year. A mother herself, Naomi views these big babies as her own children. Naomi is one of the very first women wildlife keepers in all of Kenya. Reteti Keeper Joseph plays with Pokot in the boma of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Pokot was found in Turkana on Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya)'s Pello Conservancy, abandoned by his mother due to drought, After days of intensive care, the exciting signs of playfulness started to emerge, showing that he was making a recovery and getting his spirit back. Today, a healthy, hearty Pokot has inserted himself as a keeper favorite. He is a fairly independent character, but entertains himself and the team endlessly with games in the mud bath. Diving in headfirst and wallowing in the muddy waters, he gets lost in his own mind, only to realize that the rest of the heard moved on to browse some time ago! The herd on the move. Each day, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the orphans who are strong enough venture into nature, to become accustomed to the wild. That way, when it's time for them to return to wilderness, they will know how to behave in it. Don't forget - you can support our lovely herd of little ones by making a tax-deductible contribution to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary via our website. Link in profile.
