How difficult is to imagine that one of these girls could be a bride now? Even a mother? For girls born into some Kenyan tribes, traditions such as child marriage and genital mutilation are mere facts of life. "Any old man can go and buy a girl to marry her. If the man is wealthy, he can take as many wives as he wishes", tells me the driver, a young Maasai man, on our way to a school set up for Maasai girls deep in Kenya's Rift Valley. Today, even with free primary school education in Kenya, only 48% of Maasai girls enroll in primary school, and only 10% make it to secondary school. Typically, Maasai girls undergo female genital mutilation between the ages of 11 and 13 and soon afterwards are married to a man in exchange for cattle or cash. Some of them will become mothers when they are too young to even carry a pregnancy. A Maasai woman will never be allowed to divorce. If she is married to an old man who dies when she is still in her teens, she will become property of one of her husband’s brothers.

A South Sudanese refugee girl displaced by fighting sleeps on the floor behind a building after reaching Afoji colection point in Afoji town, Moyo district, northern Uganda. South Sudan has been mired in civil war since December 2013. The conflict began as a political one between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, a member of the Dinka tribe, and his former Vice President Riek Machar, who is a Nuer. Violence between government forces and rebels has spread throughout the country and stoked ethnic divisions, with tens of thousands of people having been killed and more than 3 million displaced. UN officials have been warning since November 2016 that ethnic cleansing is under way in the country, and that the conditions are being created for a genocide in South Sudan, with Juba strongly denying such claims. South Sudan’s children are among the most affected. Many of the children crossing the border into Uganda have lost mothers, fathers or siblings, and a growing number of child refugees are arriving alone. Nearly three-quarters of South Sudanese children are out of school, the highest proportion among young students in the world.

A woman stands at the entrance of the outdoor kitchen during a dowry ceremony in Nakuru county, Kenya, on 7th October 2017.Kenya is home to more than 40 tribes. Despite each tribe having unique wedding ceremony traditions and marriage practices, the practice of dowry or the bride price is common throughout all the tribes of Kenya, in order for the marriage to be culturally legitimate. Among the Kikuyu, the traditional wedding process and dowry payment involves several visits to the bride’s family. In the past, grooms used to pay the dowry with cows, goats, honey, green bananas, traditional brews, etc. Modern-day Kikuyus pay the dowry in cash. The bride’s family has a lot of influence on how long the negotiaton of the dowry takes, and depending on the family, this is a process that may take months. On the day of the dowry payment, friends and families gather at the bride’s parents’ home. Before the groom’s family is allowed into the house, the women of both houses sing songs at the entrance of the home to illustrate the coming together of the two families. A festive meal is then held and the dowry is paid.#kenya#nakuru#africa#tradition#culture#wedding#traditionalwedding#marriage#festive#ceremony#celebrate#dowry#igkenya#instatravel#traveldiaries#madeinkenya#kenyanwedding#woman#photojournalism#documentary#reportage   #photoreportage
