What are the sinuses?
Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the skull. They are lined by thin tissue containing glands and hair-like projections called cilia. The true function of the sinuses is unclear, but it is thought that they help to cleanse, warm and humidify the air that we breathe. In order for the sinuses to function normally, air needs to circulate through them from the nose.
What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. This swelling can prevent the sinuses from draining. This blockage can lead to many painful and uncomfortable symptoms.
Infection (viral, bacterial, fungal)
Allergies (indoor, outdoor)
Environmental irritants (dust, fumes, mold, cigarette smoke)
Symptoms you may experience:
Headache; facial pain in the cheeks, upper teeth, forehead, behind the eyes
Sinusitis and Other Sinus Problems
It may feel like the worst cold you have ever had. There is fluid, or mucus, trapped in the sinuses which can cause stuffy nose, facial pain, runny nose, postnasal drip, and decreased sense of smell. Treatment can include over the counter treatments and/or prescription medications. If symptoms are severe or last more than 5 or 6 days, please call for an appointment so we can help you.
Symptoms last more than 2 weeks and are due to swelling, or inflammation, of the sinus linings with or without polyps. You may have some or all of the symptoms of acute sinusitis, along with a prolonged cough, chest congestion, fatigue, and generally feeling run down. Sinus blockage persists despite medical treatment. Sinus surgery can be extremely helpful.
