Weight gain (or weight loss for that matter) can be very challenging for younger athletes. Part of the quest for more mass is having a plan and making it adaptable for your likes and dislikes. ⠀
I don't think counting calories or macros is always the answer, but for so many athletes, they have no idea how few calories they are eating. I know depending on if I add a sweet potatoes or more fruit to my breakfast, it normally ranges from 800-2000 calories and I can eye ball this based on the ingredients chosen for the day. ⠀

List drheenan's Instagram Don't get it twisted, clean variations are awesome for recruiting muscle mass and developing vertical power, but there are more intelligent ways to develop a baseball player. I could write a very long post on this but I'm going to only highlight two points that should shut the door on this conversation.

#1 OUR ATHLETES MUST BE HEALTHY
⠀
Once using an appreciable amount of load, cleans expose the wrist to sprains and fractures. I agree that weight should not be progressed until form is perfected, but go watch a weight lifting practice or a varsity weight room using cleans, you will see misses. One wrist injury can leave a baseball player sidelined for weeks or months. A 90mph thrower with a broken or sprained wrist is not going to help you win games from the dugout.

#2 DIRECTION OF FORCE PRODUCTION
⠀
The direction of force production is key for developing applicable force transfer. As you will see in the second image, baseball primarily uses posterior force production (Anteroposterior). Cleans are strictly going to develop vertical force production. As I've posted before, when we have remove axial loaded exercise to implement an emphasis on reverse lunges and hip thrusters our athletes become faster and often increase vertical jump (see @j_murph35's in game 40+ inch vert).

Injury prevention/reduction should always be your primary goal for training. Cleans have a small margin of error without causing a missed lift and injury, not worth risk for our baseball players.

List drheenan's Instagram Mechanical efficiency on the mound and in the gym matters. The gym should be used to enhance how you move and absorbs/produce force. If you are not becoming a better mover in the gym you are wasting your time.

Coaches, Doctors, Researchers, and Therapists are very hung up on pitch counts and total innings. I get it! The research often points us in the direction of "more innings = more injuries", but I think that is a gross oversimplification of what we actually see with our athletes.

More pitches or innings doesn't scare me.
⠀
What scares me is a weak, under-sized, poorly progressed (volume of throws) pitcher. Add less than stellar mechanics to the mix and you are asking for a perfect storm dramatically increasing the likelihood of injury.
⠀
Next time you watch a professional football game check out the frames and mass on those athletes (all positions). Only a very small % would you likely say "isn't prepared" to be on the field and their size/muscle mass is a liability. Compare that to the next professional baseball game you watch where you will likely see a much larger number of skinny, lanky, under developed pitchers on the mound. Pitching has enough variables where a 90-100mph can be efficient enough to throw hard and not get hurt for a decent amount of time. Playing in the NFL does not give much, if any, wiggle room for an underdeveloped frame.

Would you let a 150lb kid run around on an NFL field? Not unless you want to to see him on a stretcher!

Would you let a 150lb kid throw 90-100mph?
For most people, the answer would be yes.

Why do we as a baseball community give our hard throwing athletes a free pass when they are physically underdeveloped?

Maybe we are naive, undereducated, lazy, or don't care about our athletes' development and only care about their short-term wins for our program.

A few notes here on positioning as it makes a huge difference both short and long-term.
⠀
#chinup - arms should be fully extended at the beginning and end of each rep. Short range of motion here can lead to literally short arming the ball or losing range of motion in both shoulder and elbow flexion which can play a huge role in shoulder/elbow health.
⠀
#deadlift chin should be tucked or neutral the whole time. Lack of control with a neutral spine can dramatically effect shoulder mobility. A precursor for #ucl injuries we see is lack of full cervical rotation in either direction.

Gave the formula a test run today which is a week after my season concluded and the first time I attempted heavy weights and 1RM's in a while.

90 MPH Formula

1) Body Weight = Height (Inches) x 2.5
175lbs = 5'10 (70) x 2.5
Result: 161 lbs

2) 1RM Deadlift = 400 lbs +
Result: 345 lbs Traditional Deadlift

3) Barbell Reverse Lunge = Single Leg Reverse Lunge with Body Weight on Bar for 10 Reps each
Result: 135 lbs for 10 Reps per Leg

4) Chin-up = 250 lbs, Body Weight + External Load, for 1 Rep
Result: Body Weight of 161lbs + (2 x 30lb Kettlebells) for 1 Rep, 221 lbs

5) Long Toss 300 Feet +
Result: No opportunity to air it out. Have thrown this distance before but put a clip of a strikeout earlier this season

I want to see exercises performed correctly and great effort shown. This is to see where you currently stand in your training and where you need to improve, don't worry if you can't hit all the metrics. It's just a baseline. If you can, kudos to you!

The #90mphformula

1) Height in inches x 2.5 is your minimum ideal bodyweight (e.g. I'm 5'9" or 69 inches so my minimum ideal weight is 172.5lbs)
⠀
2) Deadlift 400 lbs off the floor. Keep a neutral spine the whole time. Don't sacrifice form to get a few more lbs. You're smarter than that!
⠀
3) Barbell reverse lunge - load in back squat grip. Put your bodyweight on the bar and do ten reps on one side, rest as much as you need to, then ten reps on the other side. We want to challenge fatigue on one side so don't alternate legs between reps!
⠀
4) Chin-up totaling 250lbs for 1 rep. Take your bodyweight and add the max amount of external weight you can use for 1 rep with great form. Don't shrug your shoulders or reach your neck for the bar, you're better than that!

5) Long toss 300 feet. Air it out, get a solid crow hop and don't worry about launch angle. Worry about covering as much ground as possible!

We are fortunate enough to have athletes all around the country train with us locally and via distance coaching. We have athletes that travel hours each way and come in multiple times a week. Obviously there is a lot of dedication and sacrifice to make that type of commitment, but what's funny is we also get athletes come in from 20 min away and say "it's too far". Every situation is different and everyone values their time differently, but just remember there is always someone out there willing to outwork you and take your spot. Likely one of our guys

He came in 13 months post ACL Surgery and was having discomfort in his throwing shoulder. After his initial assessment, we got to work on improving his scap motion, rotator cuff strength as well as crushing his split squat and Reverse Lunge to get him to load his hips better and take stress off the knee. For his last day at ATP we got him throwing, sprinting and cutting.

Controlling volume of innings/pitch count has its place, but I'm not yet convinced it's the holy grail for stopping UCL injuries.

List drheenan's Instagram Relative strength is huge in sports. Baseball relies heavily on absolute strength and power, but relative strength is what we manipulate to increase running speed. I get messages everyday from athletes and coaches that say they or their athletes can't do 1 chin-up. I don't care if you are men or women, you have the ability to be relatively strong compared to your bodyweight. In this video, B highlights one of his athletes CRUSHING chin-ups.

Chin-ups are a near perfect exercise in my mind.
-Simple execution
-Rarely irritate any athlete regardless of movement quality and mobility
-Great strength builder
-Most importantly a great indicator of relative strength.

I think relative strength is the best physical performance indicator for overall health and wellbeing. I'd love to see research comparing general wellbeing blood screens, body mass index (BMI), bodyfat %, bowel moments per day (solid indicator of health, pun intended), quality and length of life scores vs chin-ups preformed. I believe chin-ups would be highly correlated to the best scores in each health indicators.
