A favourite day of the year, a morning where the consensus was we just had to get outside. My recent walks always had me staring North East as though I was being drawn there so I asked Peter if we could head that way. He suggested we cycle and I felt a little uneasy - worried the end of summer had taken its toll on my fitness. It had but it didn’t matter. At times I pushed my bike up the hill whilst he slowed his legs on his but it still felt good. Autumn had recently arrived and the weather was definitely turning. All noises seemed magnified that day and I remember in particular the bushes sounding alive with bees, as though whole swarms would lift the roots from the ground.A group of gents were flying model airplanes and we took a while to work out the noise was some warning on their machines as opposed to an exotic bird we could not identify. We pondered when we last came and saw the Long Man and settled on it being one of the first walks of our relationship, a good nine years previous. My family’s darling dog who had died a few weeks before would have been with us back then and been on top of her game, pulling at the lead and sniffing everything in sight. I felt the tug of sadness remembering her.We cycled to Alfriston and had a coffee and a brownie from the Rathfinny Gun Room, choosing to rest on the bench outside in the sunshine. A few ‘this is the life’ sentences were exchanged but mostly we people watched. On completion of our refuelling stop we hopped back on the bikes and tackled High and Over until it became too tough, for me at least, and we jumped over the fence and walked and pushed. The best part? Always getting back on the bikes at the top of the hill and gliding down the Alfriston Road to Seaford, mission complete and ready for the week ahead.
