List tsosrefugees's Instagram TSOS ARTICLE RATED #1 IN 2016

BYU Magazine readers rated TSOS founding member @mdbglobalmom Melissa Dalton-Bradford's article titled "Strangers No More" their most popular article in 2016. In her article, Melissa documented the story of the Khan family and their long, terrifying flight from Afghanistan to Germany where she connected with them in a refugee camp: https://magazine.byu.edu/article/top-10-byu-magazine-stories-of-2016/

About the success of her article, Melissa says, "If this type of article resonated with readers, I believe it should be accredited to the Khan family and to the readers. The Khans, with their resilience and cohesion in spite of horror and deprivation, speak to us because we share a human heart. I'm grateful I was able to transmit this story to others and I hope to write many more such stories." Melissa began working in refugee camps in the Frankfurt, Germany area in the fall of 2015. She continues to be personally involved in assisting displaced individuals in the asylum and integration process. Watch for more of Melissa's articles in 2017 as she continues to share insights and stories of other migrants seeking a safe place to live. 1435045937541178212_3284605291

List vickiereddy's Instagram I hear so many people say all refugees are young men wanting to come to our countries and terrorize us....Imad's story provides a different narrative.
If you remember the photo of me and a little baby boy from a refugee informal tent settlement in Lebanon, this is his father
. . . .

I am 30 years old, I come from Rakka, in Syria.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I used to come to Lebanon often. The last time I was in Syria was about 1 & half years ago.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The situation in Rakka is very tough. It is full of military men from both parties, mostly extremists so its impossible to live there.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I was in Lebanon & my family was in Syria. I stayed because If I went back they would have forced me to join the army. So I told my family to come here, they came about 6 or 7 months ago.
⠀⠀
I have served in the military before & there was no problem, it was peaceful & calm. But since the conflict started I didn’t want to partake in any part of it or join any party in the conflict. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Syrian people are known to be hard working people who love their work & their family & focus on their livelihoods. Various religions and sects used to live together in peace. Everything was fine until the conflict began.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Now, I have no prospects for the future, I am living day to day to provide for my family. I barely get any work here to provide for our most basic livelihoods. I hope that in the future I will be able to return to my country. Eventually there will come a solution, be it one, two or ten years from now, & once we can return to our country, & establish myself again, only then can I have a vision for the future.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
My son will grow & not know what is ahead of him. He is only a few months old and he has no prospects for his future. My baby was born here in Lebanon & we tried to register him & get official papers but we weren’t allowed to, so my baby has no legal documentation, no legal papers which could pose major problems for him in the future. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
And even now if you are in Syria trying to get to Lebanon you don’t even know if you survive to see the next day.

Ellin Spenser told me about her connection to the European refugee crisis when we recently met at a Thanksgiving event for refugees in Seattle. “My grandparents grew up on Lesvos," she explained,"so when it became a focal point for refugee migration, I went to volunteer with my family in Dec 2015. The experience I had there has now colored everything else that I do." Ellin met some local refugees at a gathering in August 2016, and now helps them practice English weekly at their family home. "One of the most important things for volunteers is that they keep showing up, that they keep coming back," she said. "Seeing familiar faces is such a big part of feeling welcome in our community. There are so many people in Seattle who want these refugees to feel welcome and safe here. So many people in this community will do anything we can to be there for them." 1432764479376168219_3284605291
