What is scar tissue?  When a muscle is torn through exercise or surgery the body repairs the injury site with scar tissue.  The idea is to repair and strengthen but it's not that simple and your body doesn't always know when to stop!

Scar tissue is a bunch of inflexible, collagen like fibres that are very similar in make up to tendons or ligaments.  This material binds itself to the damaged tissues to try and bring them back together.  So you end up with a bulky patch of tissues surrounding the injury.  It's a bit like sticking on a load of plasters and you can sometimes feel this through the skin.

This new tissue isn't muscle so it can't contract or lengthen and it isn't as strong as the original fibres.  It can deform and pull the surrounding tissues so your muscle ends up weaker and less flexible than it was before.  It can affect your joints and how they move and stick to your nerves which causes chronic pain.  It doesn't break down and untreated scar tissue can cause re-injury several months after you thought you had healed!

For your body to get back to maximum strength and flexibility you're going to need a little help!  Sports massage helps to break down scar excessive scar tissue, smooth it over and help it to get aligned and integrated in too the original muscle fibres.  A variety of techniques help the body with this process while reliving tension and inflammation caused by your injury.  Soft tissue therapy works on scar tissue to tackle pain and speed up the healing process, restoring muscular balance along the way!
