Meet Lekesa. A young red-tailed monkey that walked up to a team of @garamba_national_park rangers at a vehicle checkpoint. He was obviously not afraid of people and sought their company. Red-tailed monkeys are not known to occur in that part of the Garamba Complex, so we assume that he was thrown out of a vehicle by people wanting to pass the check point without possession of a wild animal. Our rangers brought him back to the Park Headquarters where he was cared for until he could be flown to Goma in the Park's Cessna. In Goma he was met by someone from the @gorilladoctors team, who took Lekesa on to the Lwiro Primate Sanctuary. A big thank you to all involved in getting him to Lwiro! List naturatrip's Instagram This was taken a few weeks ago when the young #pangolin that we confiscated from poachers on the Park's western boundary, and were looking after here in #Garamba, was out on a walk looking for termites. Her mother had been killed and she was weak and slightly underweight when the Park rangers brought her in. After spending a month at headquarters gaining strength and weight, she was recently released back into the wild. It was fascinating to get to know her over the month and watch her walk, feed, drink and sleep - Something that is not often witnessed. Pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world and many of those poached and removed come from the Central African forests.

Photo by @franslanting I played a game of hide-and-seek with this hippo floating in the Congo’s Garamba River near the Sudanese border. When he submerged, I moved closer; but when he surfaced with a snort--I held my breath. When you work with big animals up close, it’s important to know when to move and when to stay still. List africanparksnetwork's Instagram Despite being situated in one of the most hostile parts of Africa, @garamba_national_park is teeming with life. Nestled in the far northeast corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Garamba is home to a myriad of different species and is the last holdout for the largest population of elephants and the only surviving population of the Kordofan giraffe in all of Congo. Tragically, militant ivory and bushmeat poachers have exerted immense pressure on the park and its inhabitants over the past few decades. Our vision however is to restore security to Garamba and reclaim its former glory through intensive and extensive law enforcement and community engagement. In a landmark decision, Hong Kong has voted no to compensation for ivory traders ahead of total ban. Undersecretary Tse Chin-wan said at a Legislative Council hearing on Wednesday 6 September that "if they give compensation, it means the government pays for the ivory - it will cause smuggling. It will also cause more hunting of elephants and the deaths of those who protect elephants.” There has been a partial ivory ban in Hong Kong since 1990, following the implementation of the 1975 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.“After 27 years, as an international city, we need to make contributions in this field, it is time to implement a total ban,” Tse said. In June this year, Garamba National Park's Operations Manager Erik Mararv, delivered a moving testimony on the real and deadly impact of the ivory trade both on elephants and people. Erik recounted a tragic event in Garamba that left three rangers dead and he was also wounded. Click the link in the bio to read the full story. @wwfhk
