"When I went to Chicago, I'll put it like this: I was looking for a dime and I found a quarter." - @therealbuddyguy to dave grohl with a grin, in @foofighters' documentary 'sonic highways.' /// "My life before September 25, 1957, was one thing, and my life after was something else." - BG
60 years ago today, Buddy left his home in Louisiana and took a train to Chicago. The rest, as they say, is music history. - BG instagram /// "The episode [and coinciding song, "something from nothing"] is basically about these people and how they all started with nothing.. They were just inspired to follow their dreams, like Buddy Guy.. He made his first guitar from wires and nails and pieces of wood from a screen porch. Now he's like a blues legend." - dave grohl /// Guy was looking for work in the late 50s when he ran into a fellow guitarist (Waters) who invited him to sit-in at the 708 Club. After Guy said he'd play for Waters if he bought him a hamburger, the established Chicago blues guitarist fired back with, "man, don't you know if you feed a dog he won't hunt?"
Guy, as you'd expect, impressed (and hopefully earned that hamburger) during his jam session with Waters and Co. "The owner was walking out the door and said, 'I don't know who that is, but hire him,'" Guy recounts. And Muddy did just that. "When I walked outside the door somebody said, 'I heard you can play the guitar. I'm Muddy Waters, I heard you're hungry.' I said, 'Not if you're Muddy Waters, I'm full.' From then until the day he died we were best friends." - @relixmag /// blues is alive + well, thanks to you, BG. happy second birthday, sir. chicago couldn't be more pleased to have you.. #morethanmusic #buddyguy #legends #chicagolove #somethingfromnothing #musichistory #myphoto #2016 #whatanight #sonichighways #foofighters #davegrohl #story #quote #live #music #blues #muddywaters #chicago #fromthearchives
