I watched an episode of #blackmirrorlast night, which depicted the future as a place where your social media ranking is as valuable as money, if not more so. Being real and behaving honestly, was distasteful and actually ruined your life; honesty repelled the people around you who, offended by your blatant authenticity, then have the power to give you a bad review, lowering your ranking. Lies and deceit are not just common place, but preferable. Every move you make is judged and if you don't conform, you are punished by becoming a literal social outcast. The fucked up thing was that as I watched it I became horrified, because this is actually what's happening. It wasn't far-fetched at all. In a world of synthetic, fake, and false - food, friendships, personalities, products, news, smiles, love, asses, politicians, television, pictures (the list goes on) - I CHERISH the authentic. Since when is it a bad thing to tell the truth? And it is. You can see people's discomfort when someone is too real. We value likes from people we've never met (or don't even care for) on pictures we posed for, edited, and selected because it displays our idealistic digital self, and we hate people for telling us things that we don't want to hear, which we know are fucking true. Stop being so god damned sensitive. Stop valuing people who let you feel good about your fake self and bad about your real one. Stop judging people for being different than you and assuming that makes them a bad person. You aren't perfect. No one is. We all make mistakes, so it's time to appreciate those who acknowledge and learn from them, not hide them. Surround yourself with authentic people, unafraid to be real in a world of fake. Surround yourself with people who encourage your authenticity. And stop lying, sugar coating, pretending. The world is worse for it. It's a fucking pandemic and it needs to stop. And don't ever feel bad for being yourself. It's what you were born to do and anything else is life wasted. Cut the bullshit and just be you. And let others be them. We will all be happier for it.
