List tifebaj's Instagram My comfort place; no hate, no love, no drama, no violence, just a peaceful ambience engineered to enhance contemplation and meditations. It is equipped with cool breeze that makes its way into my bone marrow, and the unpleasant sound of the water, swamp livestocks and the woods they serve as my acquaintance and they always keep me informed of the inevitable truism that I am not lonely ... I love this place cause my heart propels at an equilibrium with the unsteady swing of the boat, I seat on the coxswain seat so as to have that Sense of control, I am in control of my life, I am in control of the decisions I make, I don't need help I don't need pity.... I gave up searching for them a long time ago, it's only me that can get me out of this place. With adequate work, motivation and a positive mindset....I will make it out of this place.

List laurayangphotography's Instagram Hey, hey, hey, it's Friday! In honor of getting back to work in a new year (okay, yes, I'm a week behind schedule in posting this) and this week's #fridayintroductions, I want to share a few things that are brand new for me in 2017: 1️⃣ After four+ years with iPhones, I've finally just become a Mac user! It's been a pretty quick and easy adjustment, and I am loving this itty bitty workhorse that fits inside my purse! 2️⃣ Danny and I are going to travel to another continent together for the first time. What?! Yup. You read that right. Although we've been out of the country (Caribbean, numerous islands) together and have each traveled separately to Asia and Europe, when we head to France later this year, it will be the first time we've been in another continent together! 3️⃣ I didn't set a single resolution for 2017. Goals, yes. Resolutions, nah! 4️⃣ One of those goals is something I haven't done yet this century: finish a novel manuscript. The last time I actually finished a novel manuscript was when I was a kid...in 1999. 5️⃣ Another one of those goals that's a real first is #myselfportraitproject2017. I want to create a self-portrait each week, showcasing some aspect of my life. I take plenty of pictures documenting other people's lives. Time to do the same for myself! But I won't be sharing all of them here (I don't think). To see them all, hop over to my personal Instagram - @lauraeyang. Have you ever done a self-portrait project?! I know 365 photo challenges have been popular for a while, but I'm curious whether anyone can share the experience of photographing themselves for an entire year!

List tanyakangurphotography's Instagram "Project with Peter - Part 3"

I met Peter in front of his house while walking to my office. We started to talk about his dog and he asked if I wanted to have a coffee with him. Peter has lost most of his vision due to illness, and therefore can't practice his job as a painter anymore. I took pictures of him and printed them in large format so he could still have an idea what they look like. 1426252693399948780_265462611

List jffotography_'s Instagram If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same
If you can force your heart,and nerve, and sinew
To serve your turn long after they're gone;
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them, "Hold on,"
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the earth and everything that's in it,
And, what is more, you'll be a man, my son. - Rudyard Kipling

List bamiphotography's Instagram The goal in DAMBE is to deliver a single "fatal blow" (kwab daya) that will cause the opponent's hand or knee to touch the ground (or even better, knocks him flat to the ground). This act of delivering the kwab daya is called "killing" the opponent.

List marinellasecci_africansoul's Instagram Great shot @bamiphotography 😍😍😍
・・・
Find yourself, lose yourself. Then find others. | This young dambe boxer was by far my most favourite to photograph this particular evening. He was so full of life, making hand signs as fast as they could go. I was having a hard time keeping up with what he was trying to convey to me so I just kept nodding (I felt like I was scamming him). Occasionally he would laugh but I had no clue what was funny (probably he has been telling me a joke). Until his friend told me he is deaf and dumb. I mean, I should have known (but there was loud indigenous music playing). It's my job to know but I was distracted by God knows what or I wasn't expecting him to be deaf and dumb.(But that's also my job. To expect nothing and expect anything). But now that I knew something about him, I relaxed and fist bumped with him a few times and then we made a real portrait.

List bamiphotography's Instagram During village bouts, contests take place in a cleared area called the battlefield, with spectators forming the boundaries of the ring. In modern urban bouts, local competitions take place in temporary rings, often setup outside meatpacking plants as members of traditional butcher castes still predominate. In these urban matches, participants wear shorts rather than loincloths. Sand filled arenas, common in large towns, are used for larger bouts, and are often combined with traditional wrestling championships.

List bamiphotography's Instagram Today, participants are often urban youths who train in gyms or backyards, competing year-round. While no longer the preserve of the Hausa butcher caste, the confraternity aspect remains, as youths who join the professional ranks join a professional community which travels to perform bouts in carnival like appearances, complete with amplified sound systems and elaborate pre-match ritual. Side betting for spectators and prize purses for competitors remain an important part of the event.

List bamiphotography's Instagram Traditionally, contests took place between men of butchers’ guilds who would also challenge men from their village audiences. Drawn from a specific lower caste of Hausa society who were the only ones who could ritually slaughter animals and handle meat, traveling butchers formed boxing teams from their ranks called "armies". Their bouts took place at festivals marking the end of the harvest season, as clans of butchers would travel to slaughter animals for farm communities. Harvest also marked a time when rural communities were flush with money, so gambling on feats of strength became closely associated with these celebrations.

List bamiphotography's Instagram Although there are no formal weight classes, boxers competing in Dambe matches are fairly matched in size.
Matches last three rounds and there is no time limit to these rounds. Instead, they end when:
1) there is no activity,
2) one of the participants or an official calls a halt,
3) a participant's hand, knee, or body touches the ground. (Knocking the opponent down is called killing the opponent.) #bamiphotography #portraitmaker #portraitphotography #documentaryportrait #documentaryphotography #travelportrait 1422638000328516615_1643765209

List bamiphotography's Instagram The lead hand is called the shield and it is held with the open palm facing toward the opponent and is usually used to ward off blows. The lead hand can also be used to grab or hold as required.
Because wrestling used to be allowed, and the goal of the game is to cause the opponent to fall down, kicks are more common than they used to be.
The tradition is dominated mainly by Hausa butcher caste groups, and over the last century evolved from clans of butchers traveling to farm villages at harvest time, integrating a fighting challenge by the outsiders into local harvest festival entertainment. It was also traditionally practised as a rite of passage for males and also for the men to get ready for war, and many of the techniques and terminology allude to warfare.
Today, companies of boxers travel, performing outdoor matches accompanied by ceremony and singing, throughout the traditional Hausa homelands of northern Nigeria, southern Niger and southwestern Chad. The name "Dambe" derives from the Hausa word for "boxe". Boxers are called by the Hausa word "daæmaænga". #bamiphotography #documentaryportrait #portrait #portraitphotography #portraitmaker #dambe #hausa #africa 1422328234821757962_1643765209
