How important is it to have agency? I mean in the sense of human control, purpose and choice?
For me it has been really important because I have seen the impact of being misplaced and written out of history.
It can be asked why do these stories, history, your reflection and the context of you matter in the grand scheme of things?
I was watching who do you think you are with @noelclarke and he traced back five generations into his family before he hit members who had been enslaved and disconnected.
The actions and decisions of our parents and theirs before them affect, shape, build nurture who we are and what we do.
So why did they behave the way they did? What was their experience? Their motivation? What world shaped them?
My story should differ because my family are from Ghana and came to the UK in the 1960s but, until now I have not been able to trace back more than two generations.
What does this mean? what does it matter? Does it affect my here and now? My children?
My hubby can go back multiple generations. Our children know that the chairs in our kitchen were sat on by their great, great grandfather who kept the company of E.M. Forster and Room with a View was dedicated to him. What a story and there are many more of them waiting for them.
My husband does not recount this story daily, it doesn't interupt his routine of just 'being.' He would argue its a story no more, no less.
However, he has confidence, a place in history, and a standing and all is set in stone. He has a place in history therefore it never really features in his concerns. It is not questioned it just is!
Admittedly, he has an exceptional story, not just like the average stories that most people have I get that, but for me it highlights for this post anyway, the importance of agency.
Having a story, a starting point, a position and somewhere to head to because you know where you are coming from.
My recent visit to #soulofanationsounded so many conversations about artist or activist?
Having the luxury of agency to share beyond what you have to fight daily.
